The nearest beach resort to Johannesburg is the angling and diving mecca of Sodwana Bay. To reach it, take the Sodwana Bay/ Ngweni turn-off from the N2 about 10km north of Hluhluwe. From here the lower, the lower Mkuze road – a hard, gravelled ride of some 60km (to Mbazwana) – heads northeast through landscape that is variously swamp, forest and dry thorn scrub. Game fencing parallel to the road demarcates private game ranches, some open in season. An alternative route to Mbazwana, from either Mkuze or Jozini and via Tshongwe, involves a slower drive on unrelenting gravel that is not always in good condition, and, if travelling from Mkuze, requires a dogged climb inot the Ubombo heights before crossing the tail of the Muzi Swamp plain.
At Mbazwana ( a forestry station with a shop, petrol station and airstrip) keep your eyes skinned for the Sodwana Bay sign, directing you to a yellowish and very sandy road that deteriorates rapidly in wet weather. This undulates for about 20 km over old dunes until finally it reaches the sea.
