Diving in Sodwana Bay

In the far north of the east coast, this area constitutes South Africa's only true tropical diving. Temperatures in excess of 20 °C and good visibility make diving on the offshore coral reefs a pleasure.

Sodwana Bay is the most popular dive destination in South Africa. The most southerly coral reefs in the world are found here, thanks to the presence of the Mozambique Current which brings warm tropical water far south. The reefs are named for their distance from Jesser Point, the only launch site, hence Two-mile reef, Five-mile reef, etc. The launch is from the beach through sometimes quite big surf – an exhilarating experience. There are three concession holders who have camps in the park and offer dive/accommodation packages. They are Triple 'S', Blueprint Diving and Coral Divers. Odysea Diving is based near the Sodwana Bay Lodge, outside the park, and runs a smaller but more flexible operation. You may camp anywhere in the park and just take dives out with the concessionaires, or even bring your own boat and do your own dives. Surf launching is not a skill learned in a few days, though, and the reefs are not that easy to finds, so consider this option only if you really know what you are doing.
